Nokia Beta Labs recently announced that the Nokia Messaging client for S60 Fifth Edition phones has gone live, and is now available at email.nokia.com. For those hoping that there would be some major changes, sorry – the transition didn’t actually add anything new minus some translated languages and “small bug fixes”.
You might be wondering what all the fuss is about, especially if you haven’t tried Messaging on the 5800 XpressMusic. Let me put things in perspective. On the S60 Third Edition platform, Nokia Messaging is one of the better “free” email clients/services out there. It’s simple, it’s clean, it’s fast, and it integrates well with your phone’s Home screen.
However, on the 5800 XpressMusic, Messaging is just…disappointing. Slow, unresponsive, no Home screen integration, no easy multi-select (although this is a problem across the board for the 5800XM, not specific to Messaging), and no HTML support. It also uselessly scrolls your email address on the top despite having more than enough space to display the entire thing.
But all is not lost. It seems that the team behind Nokia Messaging will be addressing some of the current problems in the next release of Nokia Messaging Fifth Edition, due out in summer:
We have taken all of your feedback into account for the next version of the client which is coming this summer. One of the biggest requests is for HTML, and I’m happy to say that we’ll be bringing that to you. Another is homescreen integration – you’ve probably noticed that the 5800 does not have the traditional S60 home screen for integration that Nokia Messaging traditionally uses. Trust me – we understand the importance of email notification, and are working with the device team in order to deliver you better notification. Support for APN Destinations is another request we’ve seen that we’re working on, and there’s been a lot of really smart suggestions regarding the interface that we’re taking into account. Finally, we also hear you regarding refining the touch control and scrolling within the email client.
