I just got the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic. I like it.

Let’s do some first impressions.

I’ve had the 5530XM for roughly five hours now, and my first impressions are based on my usage during that time. Full review coming soon.

Good (For Now)

- Size: I love the size. It’s not too thick, and not too big either. Weighty enough to know that you’re carrying without being a burden a la N97 or (shudder) N90.
- Build quality: Even though the 5530 XpressMusic is mostly made of plastic, like the 5800, it looks and feels a heck of a lot better. The material on the front is some kind of metallic plastic, and Nokia changed the back cover from the rubbery 5800 cover to a smoother plastic. Overall the phone feels extremely solid.
- Snappy interface: Yes, it’s still Symbian S60 Fifth Edition. But the whole experience feels snappier than say, the N97, thanks to some slick transitions.
- Speakers: Thank you, Nokia, for not screwing this up. The speakers sound just as good as the 5800’s, and that’s a huge plus.
- Touch-screen: The 5530 uses a resistive touch-screen, but it feels pretty sensitive. More sensitive than the 5800.

Bad (For Now)

- Slowdowns: they’re rare, but they happen – most notably when scrolling through songs while playing a track in the Music Player.
- Kinetic scrolling: it’s in most places, but Nokia left it out in the folder view. Strange that no one picked that up.
- Virtual keyboard: the keyboard is better with iPhone/Android-esque pop-up letters, but still flawed. Instead of recognizing keypresses *as you’re pressing the keys*, the keyboard only recognizes something when you press and let go.

Overall, I’d have to say I’m impressed. I like the 5530 XpressMusic, and while the 5800XM had more desirable features (GPS, Carl Zeiss, 3G, etc), I prefer the 5530.

This is a guest post by Martin Henning

You’ve probably never been asked the question, “How Do You Use Your DVR?” before, but thinking about it can give you some insights into your TV watching habits. I personally enjoy being able to record my favorite movies–I don’t record TV shows so much, but my girlfriend does. I like to have classic movies and new releases in the DVR memory, but generally delete them after a year or so.

We also enjoy being able to use our DVR in conjunction with our satellite TV setup. Having all those channels makes it difficult to watch all the TV we want to, so having the DVR unit be able to record multiple shows regularly helps us get all we can out of our unit. There simply is too much quality TV going on to be able to watch it all. Another great thing about DVR is that you can fast forward through commercials, pause and replay programs. Then you don’t have to sit through a bunch of annoying commercials. Sorry, advertisers!

I don’t think I would want satellite TV without having a DVR unit. So I looked up satellite vs cable in Utah to research some differences. What is it worth if your TV watching time is a few hours nights and weekends? If someone asks me, “How Do You Use Your DVR?”, I would say “quite regularly and happily”. I really can’t imagine going without it at this point.

When many consumers look at all the options for high quality television programming it can be very confusing situation. Finding the service that they are after for a good price can be a big deal. If you are looking for a great cable television provider and you are wanting to save on your monthly bill there are a couple of things you should take into serious consideration before you make your decision.

First you need to check about and see which companies are offering the programming you want. Not every satellite or cable company will offer the same programming packages. They may package different channels together, so you need to look for the companies that will give you the best grouping of the channels that you will watch the most.

Another big decision is choosing a provider that will allow you to use the DVR box the way you want. There are a lot of companies that offer great digital video recorders to allow you to get the most out of your television experience, but you want to make sure you understand how each works, because there are many variations that are out there. Finding a company that has a great DVR can make a huge difference once you get your new cable or satellite hooked up.

When you are looking for a new digital programming service provider, you may talk to local providers. However, many times the national carriers offer better price points and may also be able to give you more channels in your basic channel packages than a local provider.

Below are some great cable and satellite providers that may help you in your search for the perfect paid programming service:

The latest version of HelloOX has been released, and it’s easier than ever to get unsigned software working on your N97. But let’s step back a bit: unsigned software is simply any kind of application that hasn’t gone through the Symbian Foundation’s rigorous signing process. Most freeware is unsigned, mainly due to the costs involved (around ~$525 for the bare minimum of one signing, with extra $$$ or euroseuroseuros for additional signing). With the included ROMPatcher utility, you can also apply unofficial patches to the firmware to fix bugs, modify current functionality, or adding new features. Pretty cool, right?

Unfortunately, by default your N97 (or any other recent S60 phone) will not allow you to install unsigned applications. We’re going to change that.

The Setup

You’re going to need a signed HelloOX2 sis file. Technically, that’s all you need, but a little out of reach for most people. If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll also need a .cer file, a .key file, and the SISContents application. Note that the HelloOX2 site claims that you can get a signed version of the app by donating $5. This may or may not be preferable, as it does avoid the steps (and the waiting) found here.

Remember, if you get confused anywhere in the tutorial, click on the screenshot above each step. You might find it easier to just click on the pictures and use the onboard Prev/Next buttons to go through each step (every image has the instructions underneath).

Let’s begin.

Developer Certificate and Key File

Skip this section if you already have a Dev. Cert and a key file. Otherwise, read on.

The easiest way to get the two files you need is to register an account on OPDA. By registering and filling out some forms (directions below), you can get your cert within a couple of days.

1. Go to the OPDA web site. Click on the Register button.

2. You should something that sort of resembles a Disclaimer page. Scroll down to the bottom, and there will be a countdown timer. Wait for it to reach zero, then click the leftmost button that appears.

3. Next up, you’ll have to fill out the registration form. Click anywhere inside the first box, and you’ll see a Captcha box pop up. Enter the characters that appear. After that is some kind of random math problem, answer it and go on to the next box. This is your username. The following two boxes are your password and your password confirmation (enter your password twice). I hope the Email box is self-explanatory. You can ignore that last checkbox – it shows you some advanced user options that are completely and utterly useless in this tutorial. Finally, click the yellow submit button on the bottom.

4. You should see a message pop up, wait a few seconds for it to redirect you to the forum page. Congratulations, you registered an account! Too bad we’re only a third of the way through. Click on the Apply Cer. in the top right corner of the page.

5. You should be at a page that looks similar to the picture here. Click on the English button (top right corner) to see what that important-looking green box says. Now click on the Login button and enter your credentials into the following form. (no picture for this step)

6. This is the My Certificates page. Click on the Apply cer button (in orange, see picture if necessary).

7. Finally, a form that’s completely in English. Make sure you put the correct model and IMEI as this is critical to generating a valid certificate for your phone. For Phone Number, enter an 11-digit number starting with either 13, 15, or 18. Example: 15134567890. If you’ve filled out the form correctly, you’ll see the message: Operation Success! Now you’ll have to wait until your certificate and key files are generated. Generally it takes anywhere from 1-3 days.

8. Assuming that your screen looks like mine, and your certificates/keys were generated, click and save the .cer and .key files. Pat yourself on the back, you got through Part 1 of this walkthrough.

Using SISContents

SISContents is the software application that uses your .cer/.key files to digitally sign a Symbian application. It’s fairly easy to use, but I’ll write out all of the steps involved regardless.

1. If you haven’t already, download and run SISContents. Click on the large folder icon in the top left corner (Open file), and browse to the directory where you put the HelloOX2.unsigned.sis file. Double-click to open it.

2. Now go to Tools -> Sign package.

3. Another box should pop up. You’ll notice that there’s two tabs on the top of the box, Package and Key pairs. Click on the Key pairs tab to switch.

4. Here you’ll create a profile with your new files. A key pair is made up of a .cer file, and a .key file. Make sure you add both of these files using the Browse… button. For Private Key Passphrase, enter 12345. You can name the profile anything you want, but I find that a simple, description name like “N97 Certificate” works well. When you’ve finished, click the Add profile button.

5. Note the change once you click the Add profile button: a new profile should appear in the box labeled “Available signing profiles”.

6. Remember those two tabs on top? Click on the Package tab to switch back to the package view. On the right side, you should see “Signing profiles:”, with an empty drop-down box underneath. Click on this box, and select your newly created profile.

7. Click on the Add signature button. You should see a new entry in the “Signatures of selected component box” (right side) that reads something like “SHA1 with RSA” and some certificate validity period dates. If you see those, you’re almost there! All that’s left now is to close this box (use the X in the top right corner), and save the file that you just modified (File -> Save as…). Congratulations! You’re even closer than before!

Installing and Running HelloOX2

And now the step we’ve been waiting for. HelloOX2 should be signed with your own developer certificate and key file. Now copy it to your phone, and run it in File Manager. The installation is very straightforward, and the only prompt that might give you pause is the “Install Modo?” one. Modo is a freeware File Manager that you may want to use instead of Nokia’s crappy stock one.

Once HelloOX2 is installed, you need to enable the correct patches to allow you to run unsigned applications. Go to your Applications folder, and run the ROMPatcher utility. You should see two entries: Installserver_FP2 and open4all. For each entry, go to Options -> Patch -> Apply, and then Options -> Patch -> Add to auto. Add to auto autoloads the patches on each reboot.

And now…wait for it…you’re done! Go out and drink a beer or something. You successfully navigated through this nightmare of a tutorial!

If you’d like to test out your new unsigned application installation functionality, grab VirtualKey (it’s unsigned by default) and try to install it.

Final Notes

You can also use this method on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, or pretty much any other S60 Third Edition and up phone – it’s not limited to the N97.

Credits

This procedure isn’t anything new, although some of the steps have changed slightly due to OPDA’s redesign and the new HelloOX2 application. The original post that I used for my 5800 XpressMusic can be found at My Geeky Encounters.

The Nokia N900 has been in the making for too long now and Finally It Is Here!

We have been busy writing about the Nokia N900 over at squidoo and you can see the complete write-up on it and all the tech specs here: Nokia N900

You can pre-order your Nokia N900 Mobile Computer direct by visiting amazon.com or your local cell store.

The long awaited Nokia N900 is finally here. Many have been waiting for this release for almost a year, there have been many setbacks on the design of the Nokia N900 but now that it has been released it all seems worth the wait! There has not been as much buzz around any Nokia phone release in history.

The Nokia N900 will more than likely bring new features to the table that most consumers have not seen or used in the past and this is exactly what Nokia needs for the roll-out of this hot new digitally gooey product to deliver.

With an almost $600 price tag, this is not a cheap nokia phone, but with more features than most personal computers, it may very well be worth every red cent. Nokia does not have the best track record when it comes to new releases.

In the past there has been a lot to desire, even after their newest models are available. Many problems with the features, functionality and over all design have led to a consumer dissatisfaction that has left a bad taste in consumers mouths for years in the making.

The release of the new Nokia N900 is to be an atonement of sorts to all of the die hard Nokia fans and customers out there, but not a cheap one. I for one have never spent over $500 dollars on a phone and refuse to do so, however many say that the almost $600 price tag is not really that bad considering what you get.

The “mobile computer” title does suggest added value and added features that may make the Nokia N900 the “Real iPhone Killer” and only time will tell.

Combining a mobile computer, cell phone, high-quality camera and portable media player into a single device, the Nokia N900 unlocked cell phone offers fast 3G connectivity, global roaming capabilities, and a wealth of messaging capabilities to keep you in touch with family, friends and business associates wherever you roam. It runs the new Linux-based Maemo operating system, which brings the benefits of your PC to your mobile world. Enjoy fast application processing and multitasking on the N900’s live dashboard–a panoramic home screen that can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications–and experience the full web with the Maemo browser and high-speed wireless broadband connectivity. It’s all accessed via the N900’s 3.5-inch high-resolution touchscreen as well as the device’s slide-out full QWERTY keyboard.

The Nokia N900 mobile computer/cell phone features a 3.5-inch touchscreen as well as slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Take high-quality photos and widescreen videos using the 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. You’ll also be able to tag photos with keywords and browse them using the tag cloud, geotag images with the location data of where they were shot, share online via Ovi Share or Flickr, or store for mobile viewing on the N900’s 32 GB internal memory–which can also be expanded via optional microSD memory cards.

The quad-band Nokia N900 GSM/EDGE phone makes it easy to roam globally and stay in touch with voice and text messaging, and this model is also ready to run on 3G networks both in the US and internationally (900/1700/2100 MHz HSPA), enabling fast downloads and streaming multimedia while on the go. It also includes integrated Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g) for accessing open networks at work, home, and on the road from a variety of wireless hotspots. You’ll also be able to connect to a wide variety of peripherals–including stereo headphones–with the Bluetooth 2.1+EDR capabilities.

With the integrated A-GPS sensor, the device intuitively understands where it is, giving you the ability to search maps for addresses and points of interest using the Ovi Maps application and route a path to your destination.
